The Plant

The black locust is native to the eastern United States, but its range has been expanded by humans distributing the tree for landscaping. Black locust is an important nectar-producing plant in the eastern US, Asia, and some European countries, and it is the source of the renowned acacia honey. Flowering starts after 140 days of raising temperatures. However, its blooming period is short (about 10 days), and it does not consistently produce a honey crop year after year. Weather conditions can have quite an effect on the amount of nectar collected.

The Region

The Märkische Schweiz Nature Park covers an area of just over 80 mi² and is located in the heart of the German state of Brandenburg, about 60 km east of Berlin. Over 50% of the area is covered in forests. In addition to the naturalized acacia, there are beech trees, sessile oaks, pines, and various woody and shrubby trees.

The park is dotted by crystal clear lakes over 100 miles of hiking trails through woods and meadows. The largest part of Märkische Schweiz, around the picturesque spa town of Buckow, is also a European bird sanctuary. Up to 40,000 seed and pale geese use this region on their migration.
